The 2024 Class 4A volleyball season delivered some of the most intense postseason battles in Northeast Mississippi, with New Albany rising through a loaded North bracket to reach the state final. They weren’t the only program to turn heads as several North Mississippi schools showed they’re capable of making a deep run. With key players graduating and new leaders emerging, the 2025 season could be even more unpredictable.
New Albany put together a historic campaign in 2024, finishing with a 28-8-2 record and reaching the state championship match. Their playoff run included wins over Amory, Caledonia, and Newton County, navigating arguably the toughest bracket in the state. In the final, they pushed Purvis to the brink before falling in a heartbreaking five-set thriller. Now, with a state runner-up finish behind them and valuable championship experience in hand, New Albany enters 2025 as the clear favorite in the North. However, they will need to replace standout graduates like divisional defensive player of the year Amberianna Shorter. If they can fill those gaps, another trip to the finals is within reach.
Tishomingo County is poised to be New Albany’s biggest challenger. The Braves went 18-6-3 and came just points shy of a North Half final appearance after falling in a five-set heartbreaker to Newton County in the third round. That narrow miss will no doubt fuel their offseason, and they return as one of the most complete teams in the classification. Expect them to be a serious contender in 2025.
Amory has always been in the playoff conversation and hope to once again be a tough out. Amory, behind the state’s kills leader and veteran setter Kami Wilf, was a force in 2024 but will have to rebuild after graduating key players.
North Pontotoc and South Pontotoc are solid programs that both reached the second round in 2024. North Pontotoc finished 8-16 but still managed to grab a postseason win before falling to Newton County. South Pontotoc went 16-18 and was eliminated by Tishomingo County. Both teams will aim to earn a higher playoff seed in 2025, giving themselves a better chance to break through into the third round.
Houston and Itawamba AHS made the state tournament field but were eliminated in the first round. For these programs, the 2025 season is about taking the next step, whether that means building depth, increasing consistency, or developing leadership. With Class 4A as competitive as it’s ever been, even small improvements could mean big results.
As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on New Albany and the pack of hungry challengers chasing them. Class 4A volleyball in 2025 is shaping up to be a battle from start to finish, and every round could bring another classic.
