While the Jackson metro area and the Gulf Coast have long been recognized as fertile recruiting grounds, the northern third of Mississippi has firmly established itself as a critical battleground for collegiate football supremacy. From the dense cluster of talent in DeSoto County to the powerhouse programs in Tupelo and Oxford, North Mississippi consistently produces a high volume of Power Four conference prospects. This region is not merely a secondary recruiting territory; it is a primary front in the relentless, year-round war for talent that defines the Southeastern Conference.
The landscape is dominated by the intense, deeply rooted rivalry between the Ole Miss and Mississippi State. For decades, the battle for in-state supremacy has been waged in the living rooms of these northern towns. However, the modern recruiting era, defined by the transfer portal, NIL opportunities, and national television exposure, has changed the calculus. The borders of the Magnolia State have become increasingly permeable. National titans like LSU, Florida, and Alabama are no longer just occasional visitors; they are active combatants, successfully extracting elite talent from the region.
Class of 2026
JaReylan McCoy – Defensive Lineman, Tupelo High School
Commitment: Florida (June 14, 2025)
247Sports State Ranking: No. 7 in Mississippi
Size: 6’6″–6’7″, 245–265 lbs
McCoy checks every box as a blue-chip defensive line prospect. With verified 34.25-inch arms and a lightning-quick 4.89 40-yard dash, his size-speed combination is elite. He’s produced big-time numbers—120 tackles, 31.5 tackles for loss, and 15 sacks—and has the tools to grow into a 300-pound force at the next level. Originally committed to LSU, McCoy flipped to Florida in a major SEC recruiting shake-up. The Gators beat out Texas, LSU, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State for the Tupelo star.
Emanuel Tucker – Offensive Tackle, New Albany High School
Commitment: LSU (June 12, 2025)
247Sports State Ranking: No. 10 in Mississippi
Size: 6’5″–6’7″, 280–290 lbs
Tucker looks like he was built in a factory to play left tackle. A mauler in the run game and a developing pass protector, he owns the kind of frame that gets NFL scouts excited. He’ll need refinement in technique, but his raw tools are elite. After an early commitment to Mississippi State, Tucker flipped to LSU in June. Ole Miss made a late push, but the Tigers sealed the deal in a two-horse race for the state’s top lineman.
Zayion Cotton – Wide Receiver/Tight End, Grenada High School
Commitment: Mississippi State (June 22, 2025)
247Sports State Ranking: No. 16 in Mississippi
Size: 6’5″–6’6″, 215 lbs
Cotton is a matchup nightmare. Too big for corners, too athletic for linebackers, his red zone presence is nearly unguardable. Whether lined up at wide receiver or tight end, his hands and size make him a reliable weapon. Cotton spurned offers from Ole Miss, Arkansas, Miami, and Florida State to stay in-state with Mississippi State. It was a major win for Jeff Lebby’s staff in an increasingly competitive recruiting climate.
Iverson McCoy – Cornerback, Tupelo High School
Commitment: Ole Miss (July 3, 2025)
247Sports State Ranking: No. 18 in Mississippi
Size: 6’0″–6’1″, 180 lbs
McCoy’s athleticism jumps off the screen—and the track sheet. With state-qualifying jumps in multiple events, his explosive traits translate perfectly to cornerback. His versatility and physicality make him a scheme-diverse DB with upside at safety as well. Originally committed to Mississippi State, McCoy flipped to Ole Miss in July after an official visit sold him on the “home” feel in Oxford. The flip was a headline-grabber in the Rebels–Bulldogs rivalry.
Jaeden Hill – Running Back, Tupelo High School
Commitment: Mississippi State (June 24, 2024)
247Sports State Ranking: Top 25 in Mississippi
Size: 6’0″, 220 lbs
Hill is a throwback power back with a modern build. He thrives between the tackles, punishing defenders and maintaining balance through contact. He’s not going to run away from defenders, but he’ll wear them down over four quarters. Hill gave Mississippi State an early commitment and has since become a vocal recruiter for the Bulldogs. Despite interest from major SEC programs, he’s stayed locked in with State and projects as a foundational piece of their 2026 class.
Class of 2027
Devontray Brewer – Linebacker, Tupelo High School
247Sports Class of 2027 State Ranking: Top linebacker prospect in Mississippi
Size: 6’1″, 225–245 lbs
Brewer is already a force in the middle of Tupelo’s dominant defense. With a college-ready frame, he pairs his size with verified strength numbers—515-pound squat and 270-pound power clean—that underscore his physical dominance. On the field, Brewer excels at playing sideline to sideline, a must-have trait for modern linebackers. A key figure in Tupelo’s state championship run, he plays with the physical edge and instincts reminiscent of Ray Lewis and Patrick Willis. His recruitment is heating up early, with offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Baylor already in hand. The On3 RPM currently shows a tight race between the in-state rivals, with Ole Miss holding a slight edge at 19.5% to Mississippi State’s 17.1%. As he continues to develop, Brewer is shaping up to be one of the most sought-after defenders in the state.
Christian Alexander – Running Back, Rosa Fort High School
247Sports Class of 2027 State Ranking: No. 8 overall in Mississippi
Size: 5’8″, 195 lbs
Alexander may be short in stature, but he packs a punch. A compact, explosive runner from Tunica, he’s already earned four-star status thanks to his elite athletic profile. His testing numbers are impressive for any prospect, let alone an underclassman: a 4.5-second 40-yard dash, 37-inch vertical, and 20 reps on the 185-pound bench press. His game film reveals a back with a low center of gravity, elite vision, and breakaway speed that makes him a home-run threat on every touch. Though his recruitment is still in the early stages, he is expected to be a top target for Ole Miss and Mississippi State, with his offer list likely to expand rapidly as he heads into his junior year.
Class of 2028
Braylen Bedford – ATH, Vardaman High School
Class: 2028
Size: 5’10”, 165 lbs
Bedford is an explosive, multi-position athlete who has become one of the most sought-after 2028 prospects in the country. Despite playing for a small 1A program, his freshman year was dominant by any standard. He racked up 1,260 total yards and 15 touchdowns on offense, 67 tackles and six forced fumbles on defense, and added two special teams touchdowns to cap off a three-phase impact season. Coaches praise his football IQ and instinct for big plays. His recruitment has exploded, with nearly 20 Division I offers already on the table. Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and SMU are among those pursuing him hardest. He’s made unofficial visits to both Ole Miss and Tennessee, and the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine gives Ole Miss a staggering 98.2% edge — making the Rebels the early favorite to land the electric playmaker.
Kaiden Buchanan – Linebacker/Tight End, Tupelo High School
Class: 2028
Size: 6’1″, 210 lbs
Buchanan is a two-way talent with standout numbers and room to grow. As a freshman at Aberdeen High School, he posted a monster stat line: 108 tackles, 35 tackles for loss, and 11.5 sacks defensively, along with 21 receptions on offense. That level of production at the varsity level put him squarely on the radar, and his transfer to powerhouse Tupelo High School only raises the stakes. Now competing in 7A, Buchanan will face elite competition and receive significantly more exposure to college scouts. Buchanan has 18 offers, the biggest ones being Michigan, Alabama, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. He took a junior day visit to Mississippi State — a school with personal meaning, as his mother is an alumna. That connection could give the Bulldogs an edge early, but his development at Tupelo will ensure interest from across the SEC.
Andrae Maddox – Defensive Lineman, Oxford High School
Class: 2028
Size: 6’3″, 265 lbs
Maddox’s profile is backed not just by size and skill, but pedigree. The son of a former NFL defensive lineman and younger brother to current Ole Miss players AJ and Andrew Maddox, Andrae is already turning heads with his physical maturity and football instincts. Since transferring to Oxford High School, he’s picked up early offers from Ole Miss, Auburn, and Texas A&M — all before his sophomore season begins. His strength at the point of attack and natural power in the trenches set him apart, and his family’s ties to the Rebels make Ole Miss the early front-runner. Maddox has openly expressed his affinity for the program, calling it a “pretty good vibe,” and barring a significant shift, he appears to be trending toward an eventual commitment to stay in Oxford.
