Memphis Swings Big for the Big 12 – and Misses

Well, that was bold.

The University of Memphis made a serious play to join the Big 12 Conference, reportedly putting together a $250 million package to sweeten the deal. Backed by big names like FedEx, reports say the offer included giving up media rights money for several years, something nearly unheard of in college sports.

But in the end, it wasn’t enough.

Despite the massive financial pitch, the Big 12 said no. According to multiple national reports, the conference simply didn’t see Memphis as the right fit right now. That decision came after what’s being described as a full evaluation of the offer.

Memphis has been eyeing a Power Five invite for years. The school has strong basketball roots, a football program that’s been on the rise, and a supportive fan base in a major metro area. They’ve also poured money into upgrading facilities and making their athletic program more attractive to bigger leagues.

So this rejection definitely stings.

With the Big 12 recently adding schools like Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah, their roster is sitting at 16 teams. From the outside looking in, it seems like the conference is more interested in settling into its new lineup than expanding again anytime soon.

Where Memphis goes from here is the big question. Do they keep pushing for a Power Five invite down the road? Or do they focus on being the best program they can be in their current league?

Either way, one thing is clear: Memphis isn’t afraid to take big swings. This one didn’t land, but they’re definitely on the radar.
