BLUE MOUNTAIN – Jordan McCormick broke out of an early season scoring slump here Saturday afternoon and Blue Mountain College ran its record to 3-0 with a 92-74 win over William Carey University.
In the men’s game, William Carey cruised to a 105-69 victory over the Toppers.
McCormick, the former Pontotoc High standout who had scored only 4 points in the Lady Toppers’ first two games, rifled in 20 points, including 6 of 11 3-point field goals.
Jessi Hayles, a freshman from South Pontotoc, scored 18 points, including 5-8 from outside the arc, and Byhalia junior Joy Pierce scored 18 points and had 8 rebounds.
The Lady Toppers fell behind by 13 early in the first half, but Hayles hit three 3-pointers to spark a rally. Pierce put BMC up for good with 5:30 left in the half when she followed her own miss for a 26-25 lead, and the Lady Toppers pushed it to 42-33 at halftime.
While both teams hit 39 percent from the floor, BMC hit 18 of 45 3-pointers and the Lady Crusaders, 0-1, converted only 7 of 21. The Lady Toppers also won on the boards, outrebounding WC 53-45, 18-13 on the offensive end.
William Carey’s Alisha Mason led all scorers with 21 points, Kim Lewis had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Consuela Tucker had 15 points.
The Toppers, 0-5,red their poorest shooting game of the season, hitting only 27.6 from the field, while the Crusaders, 1-0, hit on 56.5 of its field goals.
Renell Collins led BMC with 12 points and LaKendrick McCullum had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
For WC, Drew Meyerchick had 26 points, Brandon Cooks 18, Jamal Doss 16, and Chris Cyprian 13.
Blue Mountain travels to Jackson, Tenn., Tuesday to take on Lambuth University.
