Aberdeen Superintendent resolves issues with North Mississippi Officials Association

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

According to Monroe360.com Aberdeen Superintendent Chester Leigh stepped up to the plate and issued a formal apology to the officials involved the incident after the Aberdeen-Houston game to resolve the dispute between Aberdeen High School and the North Mississippi Officials Association.

“As a district, we regret it happened. I’m sorry about the whole incident. I did tell everybody that,” Leigh said. “I do regret that it happened. I guess if they’re saying that’s an apology, I’m sorry about the incident. We want to move forward. I’m not trying to create problems with anybody. We settled it to everyone’s satisfaction.”

Mismanagement, misunderstanding, or missed point? Aberdeen HS and North Mississippi Officials Association not seeing eye to eye.

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

By now you all have heard about the situation brewing between the North Mississippi Officials Association, Aberdeen High School, and Aberdeen Police Department.

If not, here it is in a nutshell.

Aberdeen police officers stopped a member of the officiating crew who worked the Bulldogs’ game against Houston this past Friday night as he was leaving the stadium. The police officers issued the official a ticket for reckless driving — a citation the official didn’t believe he should have received.

The official in question said there were no game management officials from the school to escort them off the field after the game, a reoccurring problem that has been backed up by numerous officials since the breaking of this story.

The North Mississippi Officials Association has since stated until a satisfactory resolution of the situation is met they will not assign any officials to the Aberdeen-Winona football game Friday night.

Brandon Speck of the Monroe Journal broke this story late last night.

To the NMOA the problem is not the ticket being issued, but the situation all together.

Larry Riley, the assigning secretary for the Northeast Mississippi Officials Association, feels the situation could have been avoided if the school would have followed protocol by assigning a school official to escort the officials from the field and to their vehicle like a vast majority of the schools do every Friday night after the game.

Reedell Holmes, Principal at Aberdeen High School, feels the officials’ association is attacking his school with no valid purpose other than wanting to get out of a ticket. He said that the school executed their plan to make sure the officials were taken care of before, during, and after the game stating to various sources that members of the Aberdeen Police Department escorted the officials to their vehicles after the game.

He went on to further defend his point by saying that once the officials step out of the stadium that they are no longer officials but citizens and the school can not be held responsible for mandating the actions of ordinary citizens.

Dr. Wendy McCollough, Athletic Director at Aberdeen HS, has yet to comment on the situation.

Other officials since have spoken out towards the remarks of Principal Holmes pointing out the school’s habitual tardiness on issuing game checks and speaking of numerous accounts of the lack of school assigned game management officials before or after games.

Some have gone as far to note that have made it adamant to the NMOA that they would never officiate another game at Aberdeen HS.

It’s unclear whether the lack of officials will result in a forfeit on Aberdeen’s record, but one official I spoke to today made it perfectly clear, “you can’t play without officials.”

The situation brings to the forefront a much larger underlying problem with the Aberdeen HS Athletic Department since the beginning of football season.

There have been many accounts of school officials “mishandling” minor situation and “ignoring” major situations according to people inside the athletic department and surrounding the program.

Minor situations being, a volunteer assistant coach not being permitted on the sidelines and made to sit in the stands due to not having a sideline pass despite school officials having full knowledge of his status with the football team. A coach being reprimanded in front of the players for a player’s stomach showing when a player removed his shoulder pads after a scrimmage before the start of the season.

Major situations being the current quagmire with the officials, where many feel that the school is “passing the buck” on to the police department to cover for their embarrassment and lack of “doing their job”.

It goes without saying this is another altercation in an already long list of mishaps that appears to have been easily avoided with the proper people in their proper place.

There are a lot of woeful individuals in the Aberdeen school system as they look ahead in anticipation of more headaches coming their way the deeper they get into the school year with basketball and baseball seasons far on the horizon.

NEMS360: Long wait for Houston pays off with playoffs

HOUSTON – Seniors Shelby Whitt and Hanna Wilson didn’t want Houston’s double-header against Shannon on Tuesday to be the last slow-pitch game of their careers.

Whitt reached on a single and scored when Wilson ripped a single down the first-base line to break open a 2-2 game in the top of the third inning as the Lady Toppers rolled to a 12-2 Game 2 victory.

In the first game of the day, Houston picked up a 5-1 win to help secure its spot in postseason play.

Monroe360: Howell HRs help punch Hamilton’s playoff ticket

HAMILTON – In a game that would assure Hamilton of a Class 2A playoff spot or keep Hatley in the race, Hannah Howell made sure the latter didn’t happen.

On senior night, the senior belted two home runs to right field, the second a line drive two-run walk-off shot that ended a 20-10 six-inning win over the Lady Tigers.

If Baldwyn wins either of its final two games, Hamilton will finish as the >>> click here to read more from Brandon Speck.

Monroe360: Aberdeen may not have officals Friday

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

Brandon Speck/Monroe Journal

Here’s the latest I have this Wednesday morning…

I’d love to have more info from Aberdeen AD Dr. Wendy McCullough, but when I asked her about the situation this morning, she immediately transferred me to Superintendent Chester Leigh (voicemail). She all but hung up on me in the middle of a sentence.

For some background, you may or may not know this. When football games end on Friday nights, a game administrator is supposed to escort the officials to their vehicles. Typically, police officers even guide them out and hold traffic so they can leave.

After Friday’s game, neither of the two happened.

Instead, according to someone who saw it all happen, one of the officials got into his vehicle and blew the horn at the officers to guide him out. He shouldn’t have had too if they had been paying attention or admins had followed the correct protocol.

Not sure if it startled the officer or just irritated them, but somewhere in this time frame, the officer accused the referee of reckless driving and almost hitting officers. I’ve been told that the referee in no way did that and in fact had driven only a few feet. However, he was given a ticket and from what I hear, was also >>> click here to read the rest of the story at Monroe360.com.

Rod Walker Blog: Update on former Magnolia Heights offensive lineman Drew Bouchillon

A Second Chance
Rod Walker/Clarion Ledger (8/17/08)

Drew Bouchillon could’ve been dead.

And barring a miraculous twist of fate and heroic rescue after a bush hogging accident in June, he more than likely would have been dead.

“I just know that God was out there with me,” said Bouchillon, who is 17 years old and had hoped to become a starting offensive lineman on the Magnolia Heights School football team in Senatobia. “I was pretty close to not being here anymore.”

This was supposed to be the best time of Bouchillon’s young life, with his senior year of school starting last Wednesday, the first football game of his senior season on Friday and his other favorite season, hunting, approaching.

Instead, Bouchillon arrived at the Methodist Rehabilitation Center on Thursday after a 53-day stay at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis. In Jackson he will continue his road to recovery after an accident that took away his legs and nearly his life – but certainly not his will.

That was June of 2008, Rod Walker recently posted an update on his blog about Bouchillon >>> click here to read Drew’s story and how he is doing since the accident.

NEMS360: Blue Devils shake off the rust and the slop in battle of unbeatens

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

BOONEVILLE – Veteran Booneville head coach Jim Drewry called his Blue Devils’ execution Monday “sloppy.”

But in the end, the Booneville defense neatly wrapped up the Walnut Wildcats for a 26-7 victory in a battle Northeast Mississippi unbeaten teams.

“We played like the field – sloppy,” said Drewry, whose Blue Devils had not played in more than two weeks because of an open date and last Friday’s weather postponement. “It showed, but we were able to put enough on the board.”

There was nothing sloppy about the effort of the Booneville defense. Focusing on Walnut back Shaquille Perry, the Devils only allowed >>> click here to read more from David Wheeler at NEMS360.com

Jennings, Wildcats look to turn things around in region play

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

The Calhoun City offense appears to be returning to form despite a 31-18 road loss to JZ George Jaguars this past Friday night.

Quarterback JR Jennings had his best performance of the season racking up a season-high 227 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception on 19-of-31 passing.

Calhoun City (2-4, 0-0 Region 1-2A) entered the JZ George (4-2, 0-0 Region 2-2A) game averaging 105.6 passing yards, but a healthy Jennings could prove a very valuable asset for the Cats heading into region play this week against Baldwyn.

The junior QB connected with five different receivers on the night with Demarius Howard hauling in nine passes for 83 yards and two scores. Aaron Thompson had four receptions for 51 yards while Jase Chandler added three catches for 43 yards.

Jennings also connected with Raheem Roberson for a 30 yard scoring toss on the night.

Avery Hill led the rushing attack with 85 yards on 12 carries while Howard had 44 yards on 10 carries as the Cats totaled 127 yards of their 354 yards of total offense via the ground game.

This week Calhoun City will open Region 1-2A play on the road against the Baldwyn Bearcats.

Baldwyn (0-5, 0-0 Region 1-2A) comes into the game on a five-game losing streak after a 29-6 set back last week to Class 3A Ripley, but the winless record is rather deceiving for fans unfamiliar with the Bearcats season.

In a 14-6 loss to Class 3A Booneville the Bearcats forced six turnovers and stopped the six Booneville drives that started inside Baldwyn territory.  In a 9-0 loss to Class 5A they missed four second half scoring opportunities. A pair of first half turnovers proved to be the difference in a 24-12 loss to Class 3A Nettleton.

A few different breaks in those games and the Bearcats could easily be a 3-2 football team.

Breaking down the Bearcats.

Quarterback Tanner Gaines has connected on 34-of-85 passing for 399 yards and three interceptions. Jaylen Irons has nine catches for 82 yards, Channing Penson has 3 catches for 77 yards, Jordan Bowdry has six catches for 72 yards, and Lorenzo Hill has 68 yards on seven receptions.

Tyler Estes has rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries while Antonio Rucker and Gaines have both rushed for a touchdown.

Devin Lindsey leads the defense with 52 tackles and one interception.

Next week the Wildcats will return home and stay inside region play as they play host to the Mantachie Mustangs (2-4, 0-0 Region 1-2A).
