Changes to weekend lineup

Friday, August 29, 2008

Here is an updated time schedule for the games on W07BN this weekend – changes in bold.

P.S. I am not a big fan of kickoff being moved to 7:30 – esp. since they still take the heat timeout.  What did they think they were going to accomplish with this?

The Ingomar Lady Falcons improved to 5-2 overall, but more importantly picked up their first region win of the season in a 16-1 victory in four innings over the Okolona Lady Chieftains.

Ingomar got things started with an inside-the-park home run from Brittany Edwards followed by a solo home run to left by Natalie Frenn.  Sixteen hits and thirteen runs later Marti Wray singled to left to score Courtney Thompson to give the Lady Falcons a fifteen run lead to invoke the mercy rule in the bottom of the fourth.

Okolona scored in the top of the fourth when Quindella Ford doubled to center to score Hattie Head.

Saltillo's Haleigh Moore inks with Blue Mountain

Saltillo

Haleigh Moore, a member of Saltillo High’s championship cross country program, has signed a letter of intent to run for Blue Mountain College.

Moore joins her twin sister Heather and four other Saltillo runners – Heath Lindley, Hunter Flanagan, Ross Livingston and Will Nichols – on the 2008 Toppers cross country team.

“We are extremely fortunate to have Haleigh on our team,” cross country coach Fred Smith said. “She’s proven herself on the high school level with one of the best programs around, and she’ll give us the depth that we need as we continue to build our program.”

Moore was a six-time letter-winner for a Tigers program that won the divisional championship in each of her years and the state championship in 2002. She was an all-division runner in five of those years and all-state runner three times. Moore was Saltillo’s rookie of the year in 2002.

“Haleigh will produce great results for Blue Mountain College, just as she did for us at Saltillo,” said Tigers coach Charles Covington.

Cougars learn from loss, ready for Russell

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Alan Woodcock had one catch for 18 yards and interception after being converted from a center in 07 to a receiver in 08.

Alan Woodcock had one catch for 18 yards and an interception against North Sunflower after being converted from a center in 07 to a receiver in 08.

Drew, MS – Ryan Dees blocked a punt and rumbled 30-yards for a touchdown and Chris Butler picked off two passes as the North Sunflower Rebels picked up a 40-0 win over the Cougars.

Despite the lopsided victory, don’t let the final score fool you.

Calhoun Academy marched their way to the red zone early in the contest, but early season mistakes by players that are strapping on their chin strap for the first time in their athletic careers cost them on three different scoring opportunities.

“The first two times we had the ball we drove it the length of the field, but we had some crucial mistakes in the red zone and we can’t afford to do that… We aren’t where we want to be, but I really feel like we are getting there,” Coach Charlie Driskell.

North Sunflower took a 6-0 lead at the 8:43 mark in the first quarter when John Brent Garrison found Zach Metz streaking across the middle for a 20-yard touchdown pass.

Calhoun answered when they drove the ball down to the Rebels 21-yard line, but back to back penalties knocked the Cougars out of scoring position. The Rebels answered with a 3-yard touchdown run from Garrison set up by a 63-yard catch and run by Butler. Tyler Muzzi added the two-point conversion to give North Sunflower a 14-0 edge with 6:36 left until halftime.

The turning point of the contest came when Coach Driskell elected to roll the dice on a fourth down and four situation from their own 31-yard line. The Cougars failed to convert the down and opened the door for a 8-yard touchdown pass from back-up quarterback Muzzi to Nathan Cummins to give the Rebels a 20-0 by halftime. Muzzi came in to replace Garrison who was knocked out of the contest when a punishing blow at the goal line from Tyler Blount sent the 6’3 220 pound senior to the sidelines for the rest of the night.

Muzzi wasn’t done on the night as he connected with Butler for a 45-yard touchdown pass and scrambled 24-yards for another score in the third quarter to give the Rebels a 34-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Dees tacked on the final score when he blocked a punt and returned it 30-yards for a touchdown.

Fatigue and injuries hampered the Cougars in the second half as starting offensive and defensive lineman Dustin Willis along starting fullback and linebacker Steven Jackson left the contest due to injuries in the second half.

“Dustin has been doing a tremendous job for us and we are really going to miss him this week,” Driskell.

Willis will miss tomorrow night’s game with bruised ribs while Jackson was questionable with a knee injury.

The Cougars have a lot they can build after their game against North Sunflower, but rains on Monday forced Driskell to move practice to the gym.

“There’s really not a lot you can do when you have to practice inside except work on timing… we can work on a little physical drills, but we really need to be on the field to work on some of the things we need to because after missing that week of practice in August we are still behind where we should be right now as a team,” Driskell.

The Cougars will open region play against Russell Academy with one problem – as of Monday Coach Driskell didn’t know what his team will be faced up against other than a long road trip to Meridian.

“I’ve called the team they played about five times today and haven’t gotten a call back… all I know is they have only played football for the past two years, but all we are going to focus on is getting better as a team this week,” Driskell.

Last week the Russell Warriors dropped a 33-32 heartbreaker to the Christian College Academy Bulldogs of Gulfport – no stats were available by press deadline.

Next week the Cougars will host Immanuel Christian in non-region play for their home opener scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start time. The Calhoun Academy junior varsity team will play host Humphries Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.

Region Standings

Central 1-0, 0-0 won 45-18 over Ben’s Ford
Kemper 1-0, 0-0 won 54-36 over Rebul
Calhoun 0-1, 0-0 lost 40-0 to North Sunflower
Calvary 0-1, 0-0 lost 56-40 to Tensas, LA

In a move that may not to be too popular from my loyal fans on myspace and facebook I have started a dotphoto account to sale photos I have and will take during sporting events.  It is mainly a move to hopefully help generate an extra form of cash inflow to pay bills and be able to purchase equipment to better my career in television and print.

No sleep till… December?

Thursday, August 21, 2008

I got an email from Brad Locke a few ticks shy of 4:00 a.m. which indicates – the madness called “football season” is about to kick into full speed, but makes me wonder where did the summer go?

Football, basketball, baseball, softball, t-ball, golf, lions, tigers, and bears… wait, I think the lack of sleep over the past few days is getting to me - with the ever developing summer sports season I also wonder – where do kids fine time to be kids and what about the coaches and their families?

*** Side Note *** Bradnon Speck better be happy he has a family or I would plot with Locke to call him to ask him random questions doing nothing with sports every half hour on the hour we are both awake!

One good thing I did find out over the past few nights “Coach” is on WTVA at like 4:30 a.m.
