Mother Nature Strikes Again

While coaches across North Mississippi scramble to find make up dates for region games postponed due to incliment weather this past Friday – four coaches were left scratching their heads after Mother Nature’s curtain call this past Tuesday night will force a very unique situation in North Mississippi this weekend.

Pontotoc took on New Albany while Calhoun City played host to Ingomar in a pair of games with top seeding in the upcoming region tournament on the line, but neither game officially came to a finish.

The Pontotoc Warriors led the New Albany Bulldogs 44-30 at the 3:34 mark of the third quarter when strong winds caused a tree to fall and break a nearby power line sending the gym into total darkness.

“This is the first time something like this has ever happen to me so it is new territory for me,” Pontotoc’s John Ginn.  “There is no way to recreate exactly where you were.  You can have the same score and time on the clock, but all the situations and circumstances that surrounded it will not be the same.  We are going to have to treat it like a brand new game and not assume anything because we have the lead.”

Nearly 43 miles away the Calhoun City Wildcats led the Ingomar Falcons 51-40 with 1:27 left in the third quarter when ironically another fallen tree broke a power line sending the Calhoun City gym into the same state of darkness.

“I think we will be able to adjust.  I know Coach Ashley has been in coaching for a long time and he will have something up his sleeve, but I will have a few things up my sleeve for him too so it is going to be a good one Saturday,” Calhoun City’s Darren Coffey.

The anomaly presents each team different unique situations.

For Pontotoc they will take on Shannon Thursday in a game that was thought to be  for the number one seeding heading into the region tournament.  Now the Warriors could take the number one seed with a win over Shannon, but turn around to lose the number one seed if the Bulldogs can overcome a 14-point deficit in the restart.  While Ingomar will travel to New Albany on Thursday in one of Northeast Mississippi’s most intense county rivalry game.

Calhoun City will also play an intense road rivaly againt Vardaman in non-region play on Friday.

Calhoun City and Ingomar will restart Saturday at 1:00 p.m. while Pontotoc and New Albany will pick up where they left off at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
